Seven years spent on the same problem in different clothes: the moment two people who don't know each other have to trust one another through a screen.
Creators and their audiences. Hosts and their guests. Neighbours and their neighbours. In every case one side has to believe the other will come through, and the interface is the only evidence they get.
Most of my work has been on the unglamorous half of that: invoicing, payment collection, transaction states, reconciliation. The parts people only notice when they go wrong. That is where the real design problems live. An interface that has to explain a partial payment to someone who has never sent an invoice is a harder brief than most redesigns.
I work in systems because screens don't scale and components do, and I work close to engineering because financial states are defined at the API long before they reach a canvas. The most useful thing I do on a team is usually not the interface. It is getting everyone to agree on what the states actually are.
It is not only about money moving, though. A few years ago I spent the better part of a year outside work as one of two designers on Wura, a platform for giving things away free to people near you. I joined precisely because it was not fintech. It launched, and four years after I stopped it is still running.
Outside the day job I lead creative and media work in church, and build my own products. The same question drives all of it: what could this become if we did it exceptionally well?

How I work
Four principles

The states come before the screens
Wherever something of value passes between two people, the real design work is agreeing what the states are (pending, partial, failed, reconciled) and what each one owes the user. That is settled at the API long before it reaches a canvas, which is why I work close to engineering rather than downstream of it.

Clarity is a trust problem
When someone has committed something they care about, whether money, a booking, or a thing they once owned, an interface that is merely unclear is not a usability issue. It is a reason to stop. I design the anxious moments first: the confirmation, the fee breakdown, the silence after you press send.

Systems, because screens don't scale
Components, tokens and rules are the product; screens are its output. A system is what keeps quality stable when the team doubles and the surfaces multiply, and it is the cheapest thing you can build early and the most expensive to retrofit.

Research that changes a decision
A study that confirms what the team already planned to do was not worth running. I go in with the decision it is meant to move, and I would rather run fewer sessions on a sharper question than more on a vague one.
